How Queensland's licensing system works

Getting an open licence in Queensland runs through a learner stage, two provisional stages, and a hazard perception test that catches a lot of people off guard about its timing:

  • Learner licence: If you're under 25, you need to log 100 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night, and hold your learner licence for at least 1 year regardless of logged hours. If you're 25 or older, you don't need the log book, but the 1 year minimum still applies.
  • Hazard perception test: You need to have held your learner licence for at least 6 months before you're eligible, and you must pass it before you can even book your practical driving test. It's a 25 clip, computer generated online test, and takes about 15 to 30 minutes.
  • P1 (red plates): Earned by passing your practical driving test after the HPT. Zero alcohol applies at all times, mobile phones are banned entirely, hand-held or hands-free, and P1 drivers face specific speed restrictions and can't drive prohibited high-powered vehicles. Minimum hold: 12 months.
  • P2 (green plates): No test required here. Once you've held your P1 for 12 months with a clean enough record to meet TMR's criteria, you move up automatically. P2 typically lasts around 2 years.
  • Open licence: After your minimum time on P2 and a fee payment, you can apply for your open licence. No further test required.

What's actually tested on the practical driving test

Standard car tests run 25 to 35 minutes, and examiners follow the official Q-SAFE manual to score you. Expect parking manoeuvres like parallel parking, reverse parking, and hill starts alongside general road rule compliance. A critical driving error, the kind that puts you or someone else at risk, ends the test immediately.

Bring a vehicle that's currently registered, roadworthy, and correctly displaying L-plates. If you don't pass, the wait before your next attempt gets longer each time: the next day after your first fail, 8 days after your second, and 29 days after your third.

Tips for passing your Queensland driving test

  • Don't leave the HPT until the last minute. You can't book your practical test without passing it first, and you can't even sit it until 6 months into your learner licence.
  • Practice parallel parking, reverse parking, and hill starts specifically. These come up repeatedly on the Q-SAFE checklist.
  • Know what counts as a critical error. A single serious mistake ends the test on the spot, regardless of how well the rest of the drive went.
  • Check your vehicle before you go. Registration, roadworthiness, and correctly displayed L-plates are all checked before you start driving.
  • Log your night driving hours early if you're under 25. The 10 required night hours are easy to leave until the end, and harder to fit in during summer when it gets dark later.
  • Drive smoothly and confidently. Hesitation at intersections is marked the same way poor decision making is.
