How Michigan's graduated licensing system works

  • Level 1: Available from age 14 years and 9 months, after completing Segment 1 driver's education (classroom and on-road instruction, with a state exam score of at least 70% to pass). You can only drive with a licensed parent, guardian, or designated adult 21 or older beside you. Michigan builds in a deliberate gap here: you have to hold Level 1 for at least 3 months and log 30 hours of supervised driving, including 2 at night, before you're even eligible to start Segment 2.
  • Level 2: Available once you've held Level 1 for at least 6 months, completed Segment 2, logged 50 total supervised hours including 10 at night, kept a ticket-free record, and passed the driving skills test. You can't drive between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., and you can't carry more than one passenger under 21.
  • Level 3: Available at 17, once you've gone 12 consecutive months on Level 2 without a traffic violation. No restrictions apply once you reach this level.

Where you'll actually test

Michigan's Secretary of State branch offices don't run the driving skills test. Instead, the test is administered by independent testing organizations contracted with the Michigan Department of State, each operating out of its own location with its own route.

Why practice by testing location?

Because the test itself is run by independent contracted organizations rather than a single state office, the roads you'll actually drive depend entirely on which location you're scheduled with. A route built for a testing location in Grand Rapids looks nothing like one built for Ann Arbor or Traverse City. That's why every route package is built around one specific location.

Tips for passing your Michigan driving test

  • Track your Segment 1 hours before you rush into Segment 2. You need 3 months on Level 1 and 30 supervised hours, including 2 at night, before you're even eligible to enroll.
  • Keep building toward the full 50 hour requirement. By the time you're ready for your skills test, you'll need 50 total hours logged, 10 of them at night.
  • Stay ticket-free on Level 1. A citation during this stage can affect your path to Level 2.
  • Confirm your testing organization and location ahead of time. It's a separate, independently run business, not an SOS branch, so don't assume it's at the same office where you got your permit.
  • Track your 12 clean months on Level 2 carefully. A single violation resets the clock on reaching Level 3.
  • Drive smoothly and confidently. Hesitation at intersections is marked the same way poor decision making is.
