How Oklahoma's graduated licensing system works

  • Learner permit: Available at 15 and a half if you've completed or are currently enrolled in driver's education, or at 16 without it. You can drive between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. with a licensed driver 21 or older beside you, but never alone.
  • Intermediate license: Available once you've held your permit 6 months, logged 50 hours of supervised driving with 10 at night, kept a conviction-free record, and completed the free Oklahoma WorkZone Safe Course, required for anyone under 18. You can drive solo between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m., or anytime for school, work, or church. Outside those hours, you need a licensed adult 21 or older with you. You're limited to one passenger outside your household unless that same licensed adult is riding along.
  • Unrestricted license: Available at 16 and a half, with every GDL restriction lifted.

What's actually tested on the drive test

The route runs about 5 miles and takes roughly 20 minutes. Examiners assess parallel parking, hill parking, lane changes, turns, right-of-way at intersections, and how well you use your brakes and accelerator, on top of general vehicle control.

Where you'll actually test

Oklahoma runs testing through two channels: Service Oklahoma's own Drive Test Centers, and state-licensed third-party examiners who test at their own approved locations across the state. Third-party appointments often open up faster than the official centers, so it's worth checking both when you're ready to book.

  • Log your night hours specifically. Ten of your 50 required hours need to happen after dark.
  • Drive smoothly and confidently. Hesitation at intersections is marked the same way poor decision making is.
