How Colorado's Graduated Driver Licensing works

Colorado's driver education rule is unusually specific about age, and its passenger restrictions phase in gradually rather than lifting all at once:

  • Permit: Available from age 15. If you're between 15 and 15 and a half, you must complete a 30 hour driver education course, including 6 hours behind the wheel, before applying. If you're older than that, driver education is encouraged but not required. Either way, you need a licensed supervisor 21 or older in the front passenger seat, and you must hold your permit for a full 12 months before you're eligible for a license.
  • License: Requires 50 hours of logged supervised driving, including night hours. Once licensed, you can't drive between midnight and 5 a.m. for your first year. Passenger rules tighten in phases too: for your first 6 months, only passengers 21 or older can ride with you, and for your second 6 months, you can add exactly one passenger under 21. Siblings and medical emergencies are exceptions to both rules.
  • Full privileges: All graduated licensing restrictions expire on your 18th birthday.

What's actually tested on the driving skills test

You can take your driving skills test at a DMV location or through a certified third-party provider, including many licensed driving schools, so it's worth checking availability at both when you book. Colorado scores the test using AAMVA guidelines across three skill areas: perceptual (reading the traffic environment correctly), perceptual-motor (matching your driving response to what's actually happening on the road), and attention sharing (handling more than one thing at once safely). Practical maneuvers include merging into and out of traffic and lane selection, meaning entering and exiting from the correct lane and approaching intersections properly positioned.

How to book your test and what it costs

The permit application fee is around $16.80, and the license fee is around $26. If you test through a third-party provider rather than the DMV directly, expect an additional fee set by that provider on top of the state fees.

  • Log your supervised hours as you go. Fifty hours, including night driving, is easier to track weekly than to reconstruct at the last minute.
  • Drive smoothly and confidently. Hesitation at intersections is marked the same way poor decision making is.
  • Check your vehicle before you arrive. Working lights, brakes, and signals are expected regardless of where you test.
