How New Jersey's Graduated Driver License program works

  • Special learner's permit: Available at 16, after passing the knowledge and vision tests. You'll need a supervising driver over 21 with at least 3 years of driving experience beside you, and 6 months of supervised practice before your road test.
  • Examination permit: Available at 17 for drivers skipping the special learner's permit stage, with the same supervising driver requirement and 6 month practice period.
  • Probationary license: Available at 17, once you've completed your supervised driving period and passed the road test. You can't drive between 11:01 p.m. and 5 a.m., no hand-held or hands-free device use is allowed at all, and you're limited to one passenger beyond a parent or guardian unless a parent or guardian is riding along. Hold this license at least 1 year before you're eligible for a basic license.

Every GDL driver, permit or probationary, has to display a red reflectorized decal, 1 and a half inches by 1 inch, on the upper corner of both license plates. Decals cost $4 a pair, and skipping them, along with any other GDL violation, carries a $100 fine.

What's actually tested on the road test

The test runs about 10 to 15 minutes and covers nine areas: driving in reverse, stopping at signs, handling corners and intersections, stopping smoothly, proper seating position, turning around, steering, parallel parking, and yielding right-of-way. Parallel parking carries real weight in the scoring, so it's not a maneuver to leave to chance.

Why practice by testing center?

Road tests happen at dedicated MVC road testing centers, separate from the offices where you get your permit or license, and each one runs its own off-road testing area plus an on-road course through the surrounding streets. A route built for a center in Newark looks nothing like one built for Trenton or Camden. That's why every route package is built around one specific testing center.

Tips for passing your New Jersey driving test

  • Practice parallel parking until it's automatic. It's one of the most heavily weighted parts of the test, not a minor checkbox.
  • Buy your decals before test day, not after. You'll need them displayed correctly on both plates as a GDL driver, and a missing one is a $100 mistake.
  • Sit properly and keep your hands positioned correctly. Posture and steering technique are graded as their own categories, not just implied by safe driving.
  • Know your curfew down to the minute. It's 11:01 p.m., not an even 11, and mixing that up matters if you're ever questioned about it.
  • Leave your phone off completely. New Jersey bans hands-free use too, so there's no workaround while you're on a permit or probationary license.
  • Drive smoothly and confidently. Hesitation at intersections is marked the same way poor decision making is.
