How Oregon's graduated licensing system works

  • Instruction permit: Available from 15 to 17, valid for 2 years. Your supervising adult needs to be 21 or older and have held their own license for at least 3 years, otherwise the hours you log with them don't count toward the requirement. Complete driver education and you'll need 50 hours of supervised driving; skip it and that jumps to 100 hours.
  • Provisional license: Available once you've held your permit at least 6 months and finished your required hours. Restrictions phase in over two blocks: for your first 6 months, you're limited to one non-family passenger under 20; for the second 6 months, that expands to three. Both periods carry the same midnight to 5 a.m. curfew, with exceptions for work, school events, or riding with a licensed driver 25 or older. Mobile device use of any kind, including hands-free, calls, texting, and music players, is banned outright while driving.
  • Full license: Every restriction lifts after 1 year on the provisional license or at 18, whichever comes first.

What's actually tested on the drive test

Examiners assess left and right turns at different types of intersections, lane changes with proper signaling, backing up along a curb, parking, speed control, and how you observe signs and signals throughout the drive.

Where you'll actually test

DMV only offers a limited number of drive test appointments at select field offices, so for most people, a certified third-party tester ends up being the more realistic option. Third-party businesses operate across the state, set their own fees and schedules, and often have far more availability than DMV. Either way, you still complete your knowledge test and vision screening at DMV first before booking the drive test itself.

Tips for passing your Oregon driving test

  • Check third-party testers before assuming a long DMV wait. DMV's own limited slots mean third-party businesses are often the faster, more practical path.
  • Confirm your supervisor's license history before logging hours. If they haven't held their own license 3 years, those hours won't count.
  • Practice backing up along a curb specifically. It's a distinct skill from general parking, and worth rehearsing on its own.
  • Leave your phone untouched the entire drive. Oregon's device ban covers hands-free use too, with zero exceptions while you hold a provisional license.
  • Track which 6 month passenger window you're in. The limit doubles from one to three, but only after your first 6 months, not automatically at licensing.
  • Drive smoothly and confidently. Hesitation at intersections is marked the same way poor decision making is.
